Planning a clear path through school facilities approval

Early alignment among scope, phasing, documentation, state review, and construction oversight can reduce uncertainty throughout school facilities delivery.

Define the approval path early

For public-school projects subject to Division of the State Architect review, the approval path begins before construction documents are complete. Scope, existing conditions, funding requirements, campus operations, and the approval strategy should be considered together from the outset.

That early framework helps the owner and design team identify decisions with approval implications and confirm the information needed before documentation advances.

02

Coordinate the project as one system

Structural safety, fire and life safety, accessibility, building systems, and site work are reviewed as connected parts of the project. Resolving interfaces early supports a clearer submittal and a more consistent response to plan-review comments.

The objective is an efficient review process that protects design intent and gives reviewers, consultants, and contractors one coordinated set of decisions.

03

Plan for certification from the start

Field documentation, deferred approvals, testing, changes, and construction oversight should be tracked throughout delivery. Treating certification as an end-of-project administrative task can leave unresolved items that are difficult to close.

A continuous process—from early planning through certification—creates clearer owner oversight and a more accountable path to completion.
